Introduction

A collaboration between the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) with the assistance received from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT Japan) a National Training Seminar on IP (Intellectual Property) Valuation were held here in Manila from 22 to 24 October 2024, an important step to strengthen the Philippines' innovation ecosystem.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

This seminar facilitated the better understanding and use of IP valuation by Filipino stakeholders. More than 100 participants, including technology management professionals, entrepreneurs, and experts from universities and research institutions, participated in a day-long session focusing on the elements of IP valuation from basic to advanced perspectives.

Inclusive Prospectus

The seminar lasted 3 days and appeared to have a solid agenda to ensure participants were well-immersed in IP valuation.

∙Basics of IP Valuation: Fundamentals of IP Valuation and its relevance in today's economy.

∙Valuation Methodologies: Different approaches (cost, market, income, hybrid, etc.)

∙Professionalism: Deliberating on the professionalism expected from practitioners in the IP valuation practice and the skills required for competency.

∙Real-world Applications: Participating in simulated exercises to put valuation principles into practice.

Expert Contributions

The sessions were led by world-famous experts to provide insights and facilitate discussions. Among these sessions was Ms. Editha R. Hechanova, who presented on the professionalism aspect of IP valuation practitioners, where she stressed the technical expertise required in the field (Head, IP, HECHANOVA Group, Manila).

The ASEAN Context

Deliverables of the ASEAN Intellectual Property Rights Action Plan 2016–2025, such as the 17.2 point which calls for the development of regional resources on IP valuation practices, were supported through the seminar. This alignment highlights the Philippines' dedication to cross-regional collaboration and the standardization of IP policies within Southeast Asia.

The seminar contributes to the efforts of the national level as it will work closely with the Philippine Intellectual Property Strategy (PHIPS) 2025–2030, which aims for the Philippines to be a premier intellectual property destination where creativity and innovation come to life.

IPOPHL's Work on IP Valuation

To meet these key aims, IPOPHL has shared its plans to bring in a uniform valuation system for all IP assets in 2025. This move seeks to help Filipino creators get funding and sell their ideas by offering clear and steady valuation guidelines. IPOPHL's top boss, Rowel Barba, pointed out why we need this system. He said creators often find it hard to figure out what their IP assets are worth because there's no standard way to value them.

Teamwork in Skill Development

The workshop builds on past joint efforts to boost IP valuation skills in the Philippines. In January 2025, the DOST-PCAARRD teamed up with LES Philippines, AMAVI, and SyCipLaw to run the third part of its IP Valuation Course. These programs help create a smarter and more skilled IP community in the country. The Department of Science and Technology's Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) led this project. Together, these steps make the IP scene in the Philippines stronger.

Strategic Inferences

This seminar is part of the Philippines’ master plan to establish its global creative and innovation powerhouse. The Philippine IP Strategy (PHIPS) recognizes how intellectual property (IP) represents value —an important driver of economic growth and protection of cultural heritage and sustainable development goals.

Road Map Ahead

Successfully conducting the National Training Seminar on IP Valuation is a milestone in the road map of the Philippines on becoming a more innovation-driven economy. This will enable investors and entrepreneurs to unlock the full potential of the country and its intellectual property resources, ultimately resulting in a contribution to a much more innovative and thriving economy based on knowledge.

The Manila event serves as a benchmark that can result in similar programs in the region, setting an example of what can be achieved through the successful execution of a national training seminar on IP valuation. Such programs enhance its effectiveness by giving stakeholders the skills and knowledge needed.

Conclusion

The National Training Seminar in Manila on IP Valuation is a huge step toward a better IP framework in the Philippines and the greater ASEAN region. By working together and continuing to learn, stakeholders are more equipped to navigate the complexities of IP valuation and encourage a more innovative and economically buoyant landscape.

The National Training Seminar on IP Valuation's success is a big step forward for the Philippines. It shows progress in building a stronger and livelier IP environment. As the IPOPHL keeps putting its strategic IP plans into action, focusing on valuation will be key to opening up new chances for creators, businesses, and the whole economy.  The more you learn about the complexities of intellectual property rights, the better your brand can stand out from the market.
